In 5000~6000 years ago, China has appeared metallurgy. After entering the Iron Age in the 5th century BC, iron became an important factor in promoting historical progress and once became a symbol of the level of productivity development. Iron smelting is a combination of various technologies, and blast technology is an indispensable part of it. In ancient China, the blast technology of metallurgical machinery experienced the development from intermittent blast to continuous blast, while the blast equipment developed from skin to wooden fan and piston wooden bellows, during which there were horse row and water row. The development of blast equipment is not only an important part of the progress of iron smelting technology, but also a kind of mechanical technology, which is affected by the overall level of mechanical technology. China's iron smelting machinery in the socio-political, economic, technical level and other factors under the combined effect of a unique development context.

Blast technology is a certain pressure of the air flow into the furnace, so that the fuel is fully burned, improve the furnace temperature, improve smelting efficiency. Blast equipment is the material basis for the implementation of blast technology. Early metallurgy may have used natural wind, which later developed into forced blast with the demand for high temperatures. The first instruments used for forced blowing were fans and blowpipes (ligularia). The fragments of copper smelting crucible furnace found in Niuheliang, Lingyuan County, Liaoning Province are typical archaeological evidence of blowpipe blowing. A pottery animal head drum duct was also found in the ancient copper mine site of Dajing in Linxi County, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia (upper layer culture of Xiajiadian, about 2700~2900 years ago). These findings indicate that more primitive blast devices had already appeared in the early Bronze Age. According to the existing archaeological excavation materials, we can see that as early as the Western Zhou Dynasty, China has used a furnace with four blowers smelting equipment. In addition, from a large number of bronzes unearthed during the Shang and Zhou dynasties and their technological level, it is speculated that there should be a relatively primitive blowing device at that time, but whether this blowing device belongs to a mechanical device still needs further research. The real iron smelting blast machinery should be developed with the progress of iron smelting. The concept of machinery appeared in the spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period. "Zhuangzi · Outer Chapter · Heaven and Earth" recorded what Zi Gong said: "There is a weapon (" weapon "is a kind of water-drawing tool). Here, one day, one dipped in hundreds of beds, with little effort and much success." "Han Feizi Nanyi" said: "Examining the terrain, the benefits of boats, cars and machinery, less effort, greater success, more income". That is to say, the ancients believed that machinery is a kind of "less force and more work" equipment. It is generally believed that machinery should include three parts: power device, transmission device and working machine. If this is used to measure the blast machinery, the earliest is Ligularia, and then there are water drains, wooden fans, piston wooden bellows and so on. It is not difficult to see that the mechanical structure and mechanical motive force from the initial plow to the later horse row and water row to the wooden fan and wooden bellows show a development context from simple to complex to miniaturization and simplification. The reason for such characteristics is determined by the social background at that time, especially the national system and economic development.
